First woman of color to graduate from the University of Wisconsin’s law school. First woman and first African American elected to Milwaukee’s Common Council. First female judge in Milwaukee County and first African American to serve in Wisconsin’s judiciary. First woman and first African American elected to statewide constitutional office as Secretary of State. Civil rights pioneer Vel Phillips made a career of being first. Against remarkable odds, she persisted with dignity, good humor, and determination. This talk will trace Vel Phillips’ political career starting with her graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s law school in 1951 through her election to the office of Wisconsin’s Secretary of State in 1978.
